Lessons, Activities & Resources Examine the First Transcontinental Journey to the Pacific Coast
The Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was the first expedition to undertake a transcontinental journey to the Pacific Coast. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, the Corps of Discovery's mission was to learn how the territory acquired in the Louisiana Purchase (1803) could be exploited economically. One major goal was to find a water route to conduct trade with Asia. The following lessons, activities, and resources will let students examine the expedition and its discoveries from the view points of the expedition members and the Native Americans who helped them along the way.
