The Sound Burglar

Description

The Sound Burglar is a strategy that helps young readers develop phonemic awareness. To use this strategy, the teacher says a word to a student, and then asks that student to drop either the beginning or ending sound of the word, and then say it back.

Purpose

The Sound Burglar encourages phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the knowledge that different sounds can be combined to form different words. The student who knows that a new word can be formed by changing beginning or ending sounds has an awareness of phonemes (sounds). Phonemic awareness is a basic building block for phonics. (Phonics is the relationship between sounds and letters.)

How to Use The Sound Burglar

  1. Tell your students that some words hide inside of other words. Explain that with some words, if you take away the beginning sound, you have a different word. Tell your students that you will say words to them and then The Sound Burglar will come and snatch the beginning of the word away. They are to tell you what word remains.

    For example, say the following words and call on volunteers to tell what The Sound Burglar has left behind:

    Ball (All)
    Bark (Ark)
    Bit (It)
    Bus (Us)
    Cat (At)
    Face (Ace)
    Hear (Ear)
    Hold (Old)
    Shout (Out)

  2. Explain that The Sound Burglar also steals the ends of words and leaves words that sound like other words.

    For example, say the following words and call on volunteers to tell what The Sound Burglar has left behind:

    Beak (Bee)
    Bite (Buy)
    Crime (Cry)
    Cute (Cue)
    Float (Flow)
    Group (Grew)
    Home (Hoe)
    Seed (See)
    Trade (Tray)

  3. Use this strategy several times throughout the school year. Keep a record of how individual students progress by using a chart like the one below. (optional)
