Special Effort and Participation Grades

October 23, 2008

I teach art and find that effort and participation grades are fair because of varying degrees of student talent. At the beginning of the six weeks, everyone starts with a 100. When I check roll, I mark everyone with a minus sign. Then I go around the room and 'plus the minus' when the student is on task. This system also motivates my students to get started quickly. At the end of the six weeks, I deduct two points for each minus and then subtract from 60. The remaining 40 points come from a form they fill out about their work effort. Their effort and participation grade is averaged with their project grade for a final semester grade.
