Proper Research Reduces Plagiarism

May 13, 2009

“I make ‘application’ and ‘synthesizing’ tests and allow my students to use their notes. For research, they do all the work under my supervision. After they have done their note cards, I take the sources from them, and they type the rough draft from note cards only in the computer lab. Using note cards cuts down on plagiarism, which is often done out of ignorance. I also spend one class period explaining what paraphrasing and summarizing are, and I discuss the consequences of plagiarizing in high school and college. I even pull up real life news articles of what has happened to students who have done so.”
