Decorating Your High School Classroom

July 21, 2009

I have taught English in both middle and high school and find that there is a serious lack of tasteful educational posters and decorations for high school students. There is nothing worse than a student recognizing a poster, worksheet game, etc. that is intended for use in a middle school classroom but has been used in his/her high school instead. I buy very little from the educational stores. Instead, I buy plants, fresh flowers and artwork. Plants not only clean the air in the room but they provide a caring environment. Many students can relate to plants as living things. I always have fresh cut flowers on my desk, and it is amazing how sometimes the most agitated student will calm down after gazing at the flowers. I go to garage sales and buy all kinds of art work to display in the classroom. I also make my own posters and put up a lot of the students' work.

How about putting posters of the right values that lead to right thinking and behavior on the walls of every class room. You could put a border around each poster showing the type of thinking and behavior caused by the use of these values every day.

I like this article you ***.

i enjoy decorating my clsaaroom too, one time i decided to decorate the corner of a blackboard, but instead of just putting a colorful construction paper i also made it informative and useful for my students. i made it a "blacktionary" its me combination of dictionary and blackboard. Aside from being enchanted with the design of the blackboard border my students were also amazed how this blactionary can help in getting the meaning of unfamiliar word. try it guys.

All of these are great tips. I am excited to decorate my first classroom! I am a bit on the cautious side as I do not want to do too "elementary", but it is difficult to find items for a high school math classroom! I think the student's work will be a wonderful addition!

I had a paper "crazy quilt" created by my 10th grade students last year that included their poems, drawings, favorite quotes, and favorite photos. This was an alternative lesson to writing an autobiography. The students constructed the entire quilt, pieced it together on the bulletin board, and then had to present their "story" orally. They had so much fun they wanted to leave it up the entire year.

I set up a mural with my last year graduating students on their graduating day, students love to see their friends wonderful day!

When I made the move to middle school from teaching elementary, the first thing my two high school age daughters said to me was, "Mom, promise us you'll take the fun and color from your elementary classroom and put it in your middle school classroom! Kids still like lots of color and fun things to look at in middle and high school. Plain rooms are so boring and uninviting."

I teach American Lit and a Film class. I used an elementary level border of the history of the US. My kids liked it because it helped them place what we were reading in context. I also use movie posters which (aside from film class use) I use to teach reading strategies and literary elements. For the bulletin board itself, I open the year with the kids tracing their feet on construction paper. They write their name and for each leter write an adjective about themselves. The kids love to see this - I title it "Going Places."

I have to start setting up tomorrow! This tip comes at the right time.
