Have students write a mathematical autobiography where they are to include as many numbers as possible. For example:

“I was born on July 20, 1961 to a family of four. I have a mom, dad, brother and sister. Within the next five years, two more sisters were born, which made a grand total of seven in my family. We also had one dog, Max. A memorable day in my childhood was when I was seven and...”

Students actually enjoy the challenge of using as many numbers as possible and begin to view this assignment differently than a writing task. When finished, have the students write the number of numbers used in their story. Consider allowing the student with the highest number to select his/her own seat or some other reward.

"Number in my life" has been the first assignment in my sixth grade middle school math class for years. Rather than completing a form with information, students select important numbers.....their uniform number (which often correlates with a birthdate or favorite player), address, siblings, cities or states visited over the summer, etc. about which to write. This also emphasizes the importance of writing in math class. Kids enjoy the challenge and I learn important tidbits that become good connections pieces as the year progresses.

I like the idea of the challenge of how many numbers they can use in their autobiography. I'm wondering if I could expand this idea to another type of writing...
