Glitter Germs

September 15, 2009

Here is a good lesson that shows the spread of germs and how easily germs can be moved from one person to another, one object to another. Choose three students and put glitter on both their hands. You don't need a whole lot; a little glitter goes a long way. Have them shake hands with two people each, then let the day run normally. Soon you will see traces of glitter on your door knobs, your erasers, your desks, the books, their clothes and even their noses. It pretty much gets a spot of glitter everywhere. Just like germs, the glitter is everywhere. The point really gets across and the kids love it.

Super idea and very visual. There is nothing wrong with increasing awareness, especially with younger children.

Great lesson on hygiene. We all need to be aware of the hazards of not washing our hands.

We're not creating germ phobic compulsive kids...it's a part of any standard health curriculum to educate on the transmission of germs. This is a great (cheap) exercise to demonstrate how things are transmitted. Awesome!

We're creating germ phobic obsessive compulsive kids!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea- also can reinforce good hand washing with the glitter as well!

Excellent visual!!
