I recommend trying discipline that does not involve sending students to the office. In my experience, students' perceptions are that teachers who send students frequently are unable to handle discipline on their own. Also, discipline is much more effective if handled by the teacher in most cases with detentions, etc. I have sent students to the office, but only when they are blatantly and repeatedly insubordinate despite redirection and calm reminders of what is expected. Because I send students to the office rarely, administrators are far more likely to provide meaningful consequences when I do, and I have never had to send a student more than once.
