Dividing the Cheating Penalty

One of my former supervisors had a good way to deal with copied work. She gave a grade to the work, and then divided the grade between the students. A 75 percent on work that was shared between students resulted in a grade of 25 percent each.

I do the same thing. I explain that even though only one person did the thinking, everyone involved deserves some credit. After all, copying word-for-word is hard work, especially when you have to try hard not to copy all the wrong information (the other person's name, etc.). This has always been a one-time thing for those involved. I don't write the students up, but I call home AND email any club/team sponsors to get their [Explicit] in stressing the importance of integrity both on and off the field. I learned it from my mentor.
