Realia Connects Students with History
September 27, 2010
Whenever I am teaching about a "bygone era," I try to have things from that time period in the classroom. The term for this kind of stuff is called "realia." For example, old-fashioned telephones fascinate the kids compared to their cell phones of 2010. World War I recruiting posters, fashion magazines, automobile advertisements and old catalogues are all hands on and interesting. Things from the past that students can actually touch and handle are the best.
