Absent Bags

October 18, 2006

I have different colored gift bags for each of my classes. I call them “Absent Bags,” and keep them on hooks at central location in my classroom. When a student is absent, I put that student's name on the work for that day and place the papers in the appropriate class Absent Bag. When the student comes to school the next day, he brings the bag to his seat, gets the work, and returns the bag to the hook. My co-teacher and I like to make the joke that we love giving presents to our absent students!

I have a colored file-folder for each student that have in a crate. I put a student's graded work in their folder along with any assignments they miss. Each day they are there, they can check their folder for graded work or work from any absences. Also, if a parent requests work be sent home, I can just grab all of the papers out of their folder and hand them off! I spend no time in class handing out graded work or work from absences!

I do a very similar thing but using plastic colored folders. It works well and its up to the student to get missed work not me to remember to give it to him/her.
