American Girl History

September 14, 2005

Here’s how I cover Constitution Day with my third grade class. I have found that my students enjoy reading the American Girl historical stories (www.americangirl.com/agcn/index.html). The stories about Felicity take place during the American Revolution. Seeing how children were affected by the war has always been a helpful tip for me! While we read about Felicity I also introduce Thomas Jefferson as the writer of the Declaration of Independence, and Ben Franklin as his proofreader. Then when we talk about a plan for the new country called the United States of America, we talk about how important James Madison was as the note taker at the Constitutional Convention. Proofreaders, note takers, writers, the children understand these terms. Through these fictional and non-fictional characters, the children can relate to events of the times.
