I give a little receptacle that holds poker chips to each table of children in my classroom. I reward groups that are on task, ready to listen, etc., with a poker chip during the day. On Thursdays, each group counts their chips. The group with the most chips earns a “Friday Beverage Pass,” which entitles these students to bring a beverage from home to enjoy on Friday afternoons during our silent reading time. Children love it, and the reward doesn’t cost me a thing. We empty the receptacles and start again the next week.
