I use a biography poem to get to know my students. I ask my students to write a biography poem based on themselves. On the handout given to them, I create an example about myself so that the students learn more about me too. Not only do the poems allow me to learn more about them during my first day of teaching, but it's also a great way to introduce my poetry unit. Once I collect their poems, I read every single one and organize them by class. I take notes on their interests, which allows me to organize group work based on their commonality. This helps them to work effectively together during class.
