Sometimes we think children understand time, when in reality they don't. At one point, I thought all my students understood that there are 24 hours in a day… until one student asked, 'Now how many hours are there in a night?' Calendar activities are a great way to teach time periods, as well as actively doing something for 'one minute'. We always relate time to the children's lives, so that they grasp an understanding from their own experiences. Use every opportunity you can throughout the school year to discuss the passing of time.
