When I was teaching, I used index cards with computer labels for substitutes. The pack of cards gave the substitute an up-to-date class list that could be used in various ways:

to assign students to groups;
to take roll;
to leave notes for me;
to keep track of who left the room; and,
to call on students randomly by name.

Since I used the cards for the same purpose, the students were familiar with the system.

I think the use of index cards in class is a grate idea. Color coding them for boys and girls is also excellent. I will try using them this school year.

I use index cards to randomly call on students for anything! They love it and they have to pay attention as they never know when their name will be called. I shuffle the cards sometimes before I call everyone so they stay on their toes! My subs love this method as it really makes it easy for them to interact with the students.

I'd appreciate details on how this works--do you keep the cards alphabetized? After shuffling to randomly call on students, do you have a student re-alphabetize? Or do you hand the deck to the girl wanting the library pass and ask her to find her card? Do you use different colors for boys and girls? How/where do you keep them handy?Thanks to any responders
