Checking Homework I

I have used two different methods for checking homework, and both really cut down on paperwork. First of all, I check most homework for completeness only and students get full credit or no credit. If I see that a student really has tried but missed the point, I will consider giving partial credit, but that is rare. I have seen both methods used successfully in middle and high schools.
At the start of the class period, students pass homework forward while they are working on the drill. (I have also seen teachers that have a basket or bin by the front door of the classroom and students drop their homework in as they enter the room) I quickly scan papers for completeness and stamp each completed paper. (I stamp the papers as an indication to the students that I have seen their papers and that they earned full credit.)
In my grade log, I make a check mark indicating that the homework was turned in on time and was complete. If the work is incomplete, I mark a zero. If there is no paper for a student, I leave the space blank. Papers are returned immediately so we can go over answers together in class. When interim grade reports are issued, it is easy to see whether a student turns in incomplete work or no work at all. If a student is missing a grade and can show me his/her stamped paper, I know that it was turned in on time and was complete so I can correct my records.
Each month, give students a calendar. Have students record their homework assignments on the calendar. When the homework is checked, students must have the homework and the calendar on their desks. During the drill/warm-up, circulate around the room and stamp the calendar and the paper to indicate that the homework was complete and on time. Collect the calendar weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly to record the homework grades. Students must be responsible for keeping track of the homework calendar. If they lose the calendar, I accept the homework papers, stapled together in a packet.
