Class VIP

To avoid the arguments about who will pass out papers or run to the office, I select a VIP each day. I write each student's name on a piece of paper and make a small flip chart using individual binder rings. I put this on a bulletin board where the class can see. Every morning when we enter the classroom, one of the first things we do is see who the VIP is. This cuts down on hurt feelings, and I can make sure that everyone gets a turn.

In my K1 class I use 'buddy sticks' to choose children for special jobs or to select children to work together for activities. Each pop stick has a child's name on it. All the sticks are kept in a cup by the whiteboard. I select sticks at random - and the children know this is a fair way to choose. They also know that they have to work with the partner they have been given, but that next time they will probably get a different partner. Selecting pairs or groups this way is not only demonstrably fair, it also allows me to set the sticks aside until I have time to record the groups once the children are working.
