When I get the comment from students, 'I never did any work anyways' and its addendum '...and I'll be damned if I'm going to start now!', my reply is 'Well, maybe that's one of the reasons contributing to your coming to a place like this. We're going to try to turn that around. My goal is to turn you into a more competent learner.' I purposely ignore any further attempts to engage me in an argument over such things. First, it's an argument you'll never win with a teenager; and second, if they discover they can get your attention focused on peripheral issues they'll side track you every time.
