Disruptive Students II

December 06, 2006

In my experience, the only thing that has had any impact on chronically disruptive students is to make some kind of personal connection with them. I'll sometimes sit next to them during time when other students are working and answer some of the student's questions about me/my life. It is, admittedly, a balancing act to let the students learn a little about my personal life, but sometimes, just learning that I have a son their age is enough for them to see me as someone they can relate to instead of some authority figure to defy.

I so agree! I have been teaching for 32 years and I continue to love each day I go to work. I was taught forming personal relationships with your students was simply, "GOOD TEACHING!" It has served me well!

I think you are right on! One of the major ingredients for learning is to develop a significant relationship of Mutual Respect. The students need caring and nuturing as a part of healthy development.
