I hooked my students up with an elderly person in a nursing home. They each get a copy of the same book books with colorful pictures, and share a 10-15 miunte read over the phone a few nights a week. They both enjoy it so much!!

Love it! Siblings, grandparents, pets, dolls, video and or sound recordings are all great ideas. I also like alternating pages with a classmate to read a book together.

Oral reading is good for high school and middle school students, too. However, a good listener is required to make the oral reading an effective tool to comprehension.

Before I retired, I had my students read to a stuffed animal or girls read to a doll and boys read to an action figure. I also kept a class box with an assortment of animals, dolls, and figures that they could whisper read to during class or borrow to take home. We also had a 10 minute read to a classmate daily. Each would read alternating pages in their book. These activities helped turn my reluctant readers into students who looked forward to reading and going to the library

This is a great idea. I teach 3rd grade and I tell my students to read to their baby siblings. This really helps them with their confidence! I tell them to read with expression to make the story intersting for the youngster.

I have my second graders oral read every night too! I love the idea of read "to your dog or cat or record your voice." That idea will get them over the winter blahs! thanks

It's also fun for kids to read like someone or something else. For example they can read like they are a robot, or alien, or use various accents for older students.
