I just finished the most amazing new book that I'm sure will be required reading in every education program in every university by next semester. It's even better than the new Harry Potter book! The title is Essential 55: an Award-Winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child by Ron Clark, who started his teaching in North Carolina and then moved on to teaching in Harlem. Some of you may have seen him on Oprah in June. For each of his 55 rules, he explains its importance and often gives some wonderful illustration of how it works or why it was needed in his class. The book contains hilarious stories and is sometimes quite touching. I read major chunks of it aloud to my teacher husband and 21-year-old son as I was reading it. My son, who tends to be cynical, was amazed at some of this guy's teaching strategies! This book is SO good that our school used some of our recycling funds to order a copy for each teacher as a special gift to start off the school year on an especially positive note!
