Five Ideas for Reaching ELL Students

February 05, 2003

Here are some ideas for working with English Language Learner students: 1) Get all of the picture dictionaries you can get your hands on, Richard Scarry books are especially good. Does he know any English letters or phonics? 2) When writing to him, try using rebus (picture) stories... 3) many Web sites offer a translation feature, though I have never tried one. 4) Advertise in local papers, or check out if there is a church or restaurant nearby (make a flier with your principal's permission) whose members/owners/employees speak the student’s native language and seek out volunteer tutors during school for your classroom. 5) Use the other kids in your room. Somehow they seem to know how to break the language barrier and pull kids into the ways of our culture and world.
