Five Ideas for Reaching ELL Students

Found in: language barriers

Here are some ideas for working with English Language Learners:

1) Get all the picture dictionaries you can find. Richard Scarry books are especially good.

2) Does he know any English letters or phonics? When writing to him, try using rebus (picture) stories.

3) Many Web sites offer a translation feature.

4) See if there is a church or restaurant nearby with members/owners/employees who speak the studenteek volunteer tutors for your classroom.

5) Use other students in your room. Somehow they seem to know how to break the language barrier.
