Friday Funnies

My sixth grade reading students look forward to “Friday Funnies.” Each day of the week I take the news paper and clip out comic strips (usually four or five only) that illustrate aspects of language use. I use an overhead projector to display them for the class. Often they provide excellent examples of puns, double entrendre, or simply quality writing. They’re also an excellent, brief vehicle for cultural education. In addition, by asking “do you get this?” I am able to see where I need to structure lessons in critical reading.

I have collected comics all of my teaching life (37 years so far). I have comics for every purpose, especially for literary devices and inferences. Now that I have data projecting, it's even easier. The kids still don't "get it" even in 9th grade.

As a Technology Education teacher (Power, Drafting, Graphics, Photography, Video, Engineering, and now CADD) I have long used newspapers to supplement instruction and make connections bewteen the classroom and our technological world. I save comics, puzzles, or short articles related to Technology and whenever I photocopy an assignment I include one of my clippings on the back of the handout. Sometimes they illicit laughs, groans, blank stares, or discussion.
