Gain the Respect of Students, Parents, and Peers

Found in: Building Trust and Community

One of the ways that I got my students to respect me my first year was by being myself. Be open, honest, have clear boundaries, forgive, see everyday as a new day, and include humor on a daily basis. It helps to be clear and follow through with your academic and behavioral expectations. Let the students see you as a person. Like your students, even more so on days that they do not deserve to be liked. If students know you are interested in them, like them, and care about their interests, classes run a lot smoother. Have fun in class. A classroom can be rigorous and fun too.
