When I taught sewing in home economics (so long ago it was a required course!), our teacher devoted the first few minutes of the class to a basic skill, i.e., how to sew a dart, insert a sleeve, topstitch, etc. and then let us work on our in-class projects, with monitoring done and assistance given or questions answered. Every few weeks we would be given an assignment that would be turned in, worked on a six inch square of fabric (or two). Examples would be a flat fell seam, a French seam, hemming, buttonholes, etc.
