I decided that I was sick of sixth graders losing handouts and other papers I gave them for their binders. I asked everyone to bring in a green folder (we color code our subjects - green for science). I copied the notes, collated and stapled them into packets. I did the same for class work. No one has lost a folder because I keep them in bins in the back of the room according to class period. Students pass out the folders daily so I don't have to do it. If someone doesn't get theirs back it's usually because they walked out with it the previous day. Before a quiz or a test, we have 'Transfer Day' which is when the packet gets transferred into the green science binder in the appropriate section for them to use as a review. This is usually after it's filled in with answers. No more lost papers!
