Magazine Spur Interest in Reading
October 29, 2003
If you work with older students who need remedial work on their reading skills, these suggestions might help. As trite as it may sound, I have experienced good results by having the men read articles from Car and Driver, other auto magazines, or sports magazines. I saw a teacher once give the students copies of a Sports Illustrated article and then hold a sports roundtable discussion similar to that on ESPN or The Best Darn Sports Show Ever. The students who 'couldn't read' were all over that article, found the meaningful portions, and often used quotes to support their opinions. By giving students readings in their comfort zone, the nonreaders can often quickly be separated into the 'can't read' and the 'don't care to read' camps.
