Making Time for Your Prep Work

April 30, 2003

If you’re looking for creative ways to ensure that elementary teachers get a solid block of quality time without interruptions to prep, consider this. Currently, at our school, all the teachers in one grade level are released from their students for a solid 2-hour block and then a ½-hour block later in the week. This enables us to meet as a grade level, plan with each other and to plan/prep alone. Administrators are not allowed to call us to meetings or require us to do any additional work during our time. This is a wonderful thing, and we love it! Here's how it works: every Wednesday afternoon from 12:15-2:15 my students go through a rotation. They go to the media center for a ½ hour for library skills and a ½ hour of computer lab. Then they go to music (½ hour) and finally to science lab (½ hour). On Friday after recess my students go to the media center for a story and book check out for another ½ hour.
