When I had an elementary classroom, I always needed maps and other materials on various places around the world. My husband and many friends travel each week to different cities via plane, so I asked them to bring home the magazines provided by the airlines. The magazines include world and U.S. maps, articles on customs around the world, art events and many other interesting articles on artists, musicians and other famous people. The magazines are free, and the airlines encourage passengers to take them. I collected the different magazines from my friends and husband and had an ample supply of interesting material for the students. The reading level was difficult for 4th and 5th graders, but they still enjoyed the articles. The maps also include time zones and can be used to tie mathematics and geography into one lesson.
