Our school just implemented a Fact of the Day which is announced every morning. We give first and second graders an addition fact and give third through sixth graders a multiplication fact of the day. The students write it on the top of every paper they get that day, they say it as they line up and recite it to any teacher who happens to stop them in the hallway or cafeteria. We have been collecting data and noticed considerable improvements since we implemented these daily facts. We also alternate morning work. One week the students solve a math problem and the following week they do silent reading. Just taking two to three minutes to ask a student 3 ways she/he could solve 8 x 7 really makes a difference! Happy problem solving!
