I teach freshman Basic Algebra and had a major problem with tardies. I implemented a 'math money' system into the classroom and it has really been great. The students receive a math dollar each day if they are on time for class and have all the appropriate materials for class with them. They can earn extra money by correctly answering the problem of the week from the bulletin board or catching my mistakes on the overhead. I also give five math dollars for each half hour they work with me before or after school. They must pay for special privileges throughout the year. At the end of the year, I have an auction of items I get donated by local businesses. The students love it, they learn a little about saving money, it has lessened the frequency of tardies, students are coming in more often for extra help, and at the end of the year they are rewarded for their efforts.
