To help me cope with the smudging problems that arise from being left-handed, my dad give me mechanical pencils with hard lead and number 3 pencils also work well. Number 2 pencils that are made overseas seem to smear the most. Another trick that works is to use pencils with sharp points because as the point wears down, your letters become wider and you have more surface to smear as you write. Mechanical pencils with hard lead also help with the wearing the point down problem. Fine point pens do not smear as much as regular pointed ones.
