Memory Trees

Found in: building trust & community

I had students who experienced the death of an immediate family member so for the holidays we made memory trees to honor their loved one. I bought miniature trees and the students covered them with symbols representing their family member. In addition, I supplied small ornaments like flags, teddy bears, musical instruments, athletic symbols, etc., and the students used these or made their own to decorate the trees. They wrote an explanation of their tree and in whose memory it's was made on a 2 x 2 card. In our school, we had about twenty students affected by loss of a family member. Their memory trees were displayed in the hallway showcase.
