In order not to be punishing all the time, and in an effort to punish only those who need discipline and not the well behaved students, my team of teachers has created a monthly points (demerits) system. We inform students and parents about our system at the very beginning of the year. We keep track of negative points earned by students. If they earn 15 or more demerits in a month, they are not allowed to participate in our end-of-the-month activity which could be an afternoon of kickball outside, a movie, a game and snack afternoon or something else fun. The idea is that we are not punishing the naughty students but we are rewarding the good ones. This takes away the negativity and encourages the better behavior.
