When the weather is nice, I take my 5th graders, some chalk and some beanbags out to the blacktop. We group ourselves into teams of five or six. We write musical symbols on the sidewalk and take turns calling out the names of the symbols. The first person to get his/her beanbag on the correct symbol wins. We reward the winners on each team. This type of game could be done with the alphabet for little ones or teaching kids to do math in their heads (give out problems such as 2 + 2 = ?). The first team to get their beanbag on the answer wins.
