I'm a 2nd year teacher and found out the hard way that each teacher really does need their own secretary! I was fortunate enough my first year to have a fabulous Para who helped me keep things straight, but this year I am on my own all day! I have recruited students to pass out papers for me (handouts, announcements, homework, etc). I created a Postmaster position in my list of classroom jobs. The kids love this job and are always eager to do it for me. I have set clear rules that they can only pass out the papers to their classmates' mailboxes (hanging files in an open crate) during free time or when I'm reading aloud to the class. I remind the class at the end of each day to check their mailboxes for handouts. So far I have found this to be the most effective way to get notices to parents on time. Students are only allowed to 'get their mail' at the end of the day when they will be most likely to put it right into their bags.
