I found a wonderful way to get my students to read text carefully. Before we begin an abbreviated discussion of the chapters, the students solve a puzzle. Sometimes the puzzle is a simple crossword, word search; other times I use a word search with a twist in which the students use clues to find the words in the puzzle, tumble puzzles or Scrabble tiles. All the puzzles require a journey through the appropriate chapter. They love these puzzles and haven’t figured out yet that they are learning at the same time! By the time we leave a chapter, we have gone over the information three or four times in different forms.
