I read in NEA Today to use Popsicle sticks to randomly call on students. As a high school teacher with over 100 students, I use index cards instead. I have the students put their name and something unique about themselves on the cards, so I learn their names. I use the cards in many ways. I can make tally marks to make sure students have been called upon; shuffle them to keep it random; lay them out to make new seating charts, quickly make groups, or hand half the students a card with a partner's name for quick pairing.
