One of the stations I use during reading has markers, colored sentence strips, scissors and the students' current reading book. On Mondays, I select spelling words from the coming week’s reading material and list them on a homework sheet. While I work with small groups, students use their homework sheet and reading book to search for the spelling words and phrases. Students highlight the spelling words and phrases, write them on sentence strips with markers (they love markers!), and post them on a bulletin board. They practice reading the words and phrases after their regular work is finished. The words and phrases are posted in the hall outside the classroom at the end of the week. Students in my class and other classes practice fluency and build self-confidence because they enjoy this activity. My students really love this station, and I think it is very effective.
