School-Wide Mock Election

Found in: social studies

Every fall for the last five years, I’ve organized our school's mock election, involving about 20 teachers and 400-500 students. We follow guidelines from the National Mock Election website, general political sites, and national party sites.

I developed and shared a variety of activities my colleagues can easily incorporate in their curriculum. We hold our school election about a week before the national election, decorating our school's lobby with voting posters, flags and red, white and blue bunting. Many teachers invite local candidates to speak to their classes, as well. Our students have become much more involved in the political process and have deepened their understanding of the importance of the civic responsibility to vote.
