Our middle school has sponsored a Science Olympiad team for the past 4 years. This program is in almost every state and is a way to involve students who are interested in science and problem solving. There are about 20 different events, ranging from open-ended construction projects to events in which the students become experts on subjects such as fossils, birds, or water quality. Even if you don't compete, the events are challenging and engaging for students who like to do more science than worksheets and 'cookbook' labs. For more information, see the National Science Olympiad website at www.soinc.org.
