Screening Young Readers
June 22, 2005
As a Reading Coach in a rural school serves some children at risk, I have found the PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) Pre K assessment, which is available from the University of Virginia, to be a wonderful screening tool for incoming kindergarten students (we screen them in April before summer school which starts in June). Likewise its companion pieces, PALS K and PALS 1-3, are great tools for those respective classes. For the fourth and fifth graders in our school we use the book Word Journeys for assessment; then we use Words Their Way for spelling and Qualitative Reading Inventory-3 for reading.
