Spelling Signs

When teaching my first graders their spelling words, I chant the letters in order, and I teach children how to fingerspell the words using American Sign Language. I teach them the signs for whole words as well. The kinesthetic addition is a lot of fun and has the added benefit of giving them another way of remembering the word. It also makes for a very silent spelling test.
