Starting a Biotechnology Course

November 24, 2004

Biotechnology is one of the hottest topics in the life sciences and more high schools need to add such courses to their curriculum. Numerous careers that utilize skills acquired in this area are available to our students. Biology teachers desiring to stay on the cutting edge must add learning activities that actively engage young people. Our school has had a biotechnology course for the past four years and the students absolutely love it! I would advise using activities from several sources, but the best come from a couple of sources: DNA Science from the DNA Learning Center of Cold Spring Harbor and Shoestring Biotechnology - Budget-Oriented High Quality Biotechnology Laboratories for Two-Year College and High School from the National Association of Biology Teachers. If anyone would like to send me an email (sustevens42@hotmail.com) I would be happy to send a simple syllabus for my biotechnology course.
