I do not lecture to middle school students. I have the students take divided page notes as we read. We stop periodically as we are reading, and I show a PowerPoint presentation on the important items. I read for a while, periodically stopping and calling on students to read. We drop marbles into a jar if the student that I have called on has been following along and can continue reading where I stopped. We have a competition between my classes to see which class can fill the jar first with their class marble color. The class that wins has a pizza or donut party. I have a big jar so it takes almost a semester to fill the jar.
