Teacher Visit

Found in: language arts; motivating students

To make writing sequential directions meaningful for students, I ask their parents to provide a map showing the route from their house to school. The map must include street names. In class, students write a paragraph giving me directions so I can drive my car from school to their house. I tell the students that those who do a terrific job will have their names put into a jar, and I will visit them at home. I randomly select two students from the jar, prearrange a visit and drive to their houses using their directions. It's amazing the difference this incentive makes in motivating students to give me a well-written paragraph.
