Tests as Opportunities

I noticed that some students get uptight at the mention of a test or quiz. To overcome this, I simply tell the students, “We don't have test or quizzes. You will have silver opportunities to show me your knowledge of the subject. We also have golden opportunities and even a platinum opportunity at the end of the semester.” The students enjoy the terminology and have even taken it to other teachers who now do the same thing. Students who once dreaded tests now look forward to sharing their knowledge with me.
