The Los Angeles Theory

November 19, 2003

Occasionally I need to remind parents that no matter how long it takes, their child can learn the proposed standard; it just takes some longer to learn than others. To help them understand learning is constant, but time is variable, I use my 'Los Angeles' Theory: If it takes two hours to get to Los Angeles, but it takes me five, I don't fail Los Angeles. That example has comforted many parents with children having a hard time learning how to read.
