I use the Quiet Game with my third graders. This not only encourages them to stay in a reasonably straight line, it helps them to remain quiet in the hallways. I select a student to monitor the class. This student then chooses another student to take his/her place. It may be necessary to ask boys to choose girls and girls to choose boys, depending on the group. After introducing this method the students invariably clamor for its use when we are in the hall.
